1. It is necessary to wear sunglasses?
I feel no apparent discomfort moving out in the sun? Sunlight contains UV rays which are emitted mostly between 11 am to 3 pm. UV rays are mostly filtered out by the cornea but some still pass through to the lens. This can cause cataracts, macula degeneration and retina damage in the long term

 

2. What is the difference between UVA, UVB and UVC rays?
The difference lies in the wavelength. UVB rays are most harmful to the skin and eyes causing cataracts. UVC rays are cancer causing but fortunately filtered out by the ozone layer. UVA rays are the least harmful

3. Can I use dark glasses? Will it protect me from UV rays?
Polarized lenses are specially made using anti reflective coating, lens, polarizing film, scratch resistant coating and mirror coating. It is always recommended to buy your sunglasses from a certified vendor.

 

4. A costlier pair of sunglasses offers more protection than cheaper sunglasses?
This is a myth which is not true. It depends on whether the lenses used are certified and protect from UV radiation. This will usually be mentioned on the glasses themselves or in the packaging.

 

5. What are the options available in lenses for sunglasses for general purpose?
For general purpose usage gray/black tints and green tints are the best.

6. I wear glasses? I do not want the inconvenience of carrying two sets of glasses?
Photochromic lenses are available. These darken in natural light and are transparent in artificial lighting or indoors.

7. Do children need sunglasses?
The lens of the eye is underdeveloped and therefore more susceptible to UV radiation. Children generally spend more time outdoors than adults. Hence it is important to use sunglasses

b. Gradient lenses : to help in driving
c. Photochromic lenses: Prescription sunglasses
d. Mirror coated lenses: limit the reflection cause from the sky

 

9. During what time period should one wear sunglasses?
Sunglasses should be ideally worn if one is moving out between 11am to 3pm. This is the time during which the proportion of UV radiation in sunlight is the most as the sun is directly overhead.

10. What is the purpose of polarized sunglasses?
Polarized sunglasses filter horizontally polarized light. Thus it makes for a better perception of details. For e.g. polarized sunglasses would assist the wearer is seeing objects underwater which would not be easily observed by the naked eye.
