UV Index

By this time, it is already common knowledge that the earth s ozone layer does not only have a hole in it, but is also slowly diminishing and becoming thinner and thinner. The purpose of the ozone layer is to shield the earth and the people and things within it from the UV radiation emanating from the sun. However, because of people s abuse and lack of knowledge, care and concern about the environment, the ozone layer has slowly been undergoing some amount of depletion over the past few years.

One of the most dangerous results or consequences of the ozone layer s depletion is the increase in the number of people affected with diseases related in some way to prolonged sun exposure, as well as UV radiation. This growing cause for concern has persuaded the World Health Organization (WHO) to launch an information and knowledge campaign, which aims to: 1) raise public awareness on the dangers and hazards that accompany excessive exposure to UV radiation; and 2) encourage people to adopt habits and practices that will eventually protect them from the said hazards and dangers. As a result of this endeavor, the UVI or UV Index came into being.

So what indeed is this UVI or UV Index? The UVI or UV Index is a means of measuring the level of UV radiation in our environment and surroundings. This was developed by the WHO, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Meteorological Organization, in an effort to help the public protect themselves against the long-term and damaging effects of UV radiation exposure. This is accomplished by means of a daily forecast of UV radiation levels to be expected in different areas all over the world. The UV index makes use of a scale ranging from 0 to 10+ to measure and quantify the intensity level of UV radiation penetrating the earth s surface on any given day. In this scale, a rating of 0 indicates a very minimal risk of overexposure to UV radiation; in contrast, a rating of 10+ indicates a very high and extremely dangerous risk of overexposure.

A more detailed guide on how to interpret UV Index readings is as follows. A UVI reading of 0-2 means that there is very minimal danger of overexposure. Wearing a hat and sunglasses would be sufficient protection and people can stay for as long as one hour under the sun during the hottest hours of 10 am to 4 pm, without fear of sun damage.

A reading of 3-4 indicates low risk for overexposure. Using a hat, sunglasses, and a sunscreen with SPF 15 is recommended.

A reading of 5-6 translates to a moderate risk of overexposure. Wearing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, and staying under the shade is advisable.

A reading of 7-9 means a high risk of overexposure. Aside from wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with SPF 15 and above, and staying under the shade, it is highly advisable to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day.

A reading of 10+ indicates a very high risk of overexposure. Aside from employing all the precautions previously mentioned, during days like these, it is best to avoid the sun altogether, if possible.
